In the Northern Hemisphere, from February to July you’ll be able to photograph a Milky Way panorama that includes all the galactic band arching from the northeast to the south. The best time of the year to shoot the Milky Wayand your geographical location play a key role in the planning of your Milky Way panorama and your composition.

Learning how to shoot a Milky Way panorama is a complex task, and many factors need to come together. In the following examples, the focal length of my zoom lens was set to approximately "normal".Īnd returning to my post of March 11, I offer this clarification: for natural looking results, with lenses other than extreme wide angle lenses, I have not found anything better than, easier than, faster than, or cheaper than free MS-ICE.Milky Way Arc panorama in Spain How to shoot a Milky Way Panorama in 6 Steps IMHO, a "normal" focal length lens, (focal length equal to diameter of image circle when lens is focused at infinity) yields a natural looking diminishing progression of object size from near to far, i.e. This effect must be kept in mind when making panoramas at long focal length in order to increase effective resolution (number of pixels) beyond the highest pixel count available in a single exposure from a given camera. A very long focal length lens compresses this progression. Of special interest to me is the diminishing progression of object size from near to far. A telephoto lens tends to reverse these effects. Using a fisheye lens further exaggerates these effects. Using a wide angle lens (lens of focal length less than the diameter of image circle when lens is focused at infinity): (a) increases depth of field, (b) generates perspective distortion of objects not parallel to the plane of the photo sensor (or film), and (c) exagerrates the diminishing progression of object size from near to far. from a fisheye lens?" (drh681: please feel free to correct). Is composition at the heart of the comment by drh681, ". In reviewing this and other posts about panorama stitching, I recall that few posts refer to photographic composition, which, in this case, does impact selection of stitching software.

Software recommended by jannefoo and the example posted by JJMacks directly address the OP's request.

The OP asked about stitching software for use with "shots from near-fisheye lenses (8mm)".

I think this is well worth the download time and keeping it on your system for occasional use. I don't do stitches all that often, but when I do one, I expect it to live up to certain standards. I consider myself a 'seriously' casual stitcher. You can save your image in 7 or so various image file formats, you can adjust the level of quality of the save and even adjust the image size of the finished product. I'm not 100% sure what it is for, but it might be useful for joining multiple hand held shots where you aren't certain that the camera remained on the same vertical plane at all times. ICE has some interesting controls, one of which is "Camera Motion" a tool that seems to curve the joins up or down giving a wavy look to the image. The stitch that was produced in seconds is pretty much a duplicate of what took me a couple of hours to produce in. The stitch was completed within a second, and by default the best possible crop is displayed though you can see the un-cropped image if you want. And as soon as the photos were opened in ICE, the merge immediately began. I selected 3 images that comprised a prior stitch that I was never happy with and which took me a while to get the way I wanted. The user interface seems clean and well thought out.

The 64 bit version seems a bit snappier than the other stitching programs I've used in the past

One of the problems with stitching programs in the past was that the good ones, seemed to take a while to complete the task. It's been a while since I've reviewed stitching programs, so I don't know if 64 bit versions are all that common now, but I liked that MS offers a 64 bit version.
